Heritage Open Days Weekend
8th - 11th September 2011

Heritage Open Days:

·         celebrate England’s architectural, historic, cultural or social heritage by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee.

·         include tours, events and activities that focus on local architecture and culture, helping visitors to understand the history, architectural merit or function of the property or events such as guided tours, talks, pamphlets or exhibitions.

·         is organised by local organisations together with thousands of volunteers who open up buildings and run activities in their community.

Many buildings of every age, style and function open their doors free of charge. Many of these places are normally closed to the public, while others usually charge for admission. But Heritage Open Days is not just about opening buildings. The programme also includes many activities that bring to life the stories and traditions that make places, communities and neighbourhoods so special.

Fenland Heritage Weekend 2010 gave many new opportunities to explore various buildings in March: St Wendreda’s; St Peter’s; The Ship In; March Museum; March Library; March Town Hall and included historic walks along  West End and the River Nene.

Other new properties in Fenland included All Saints' Church, Walsoken; Fenland & West Norfolk Aviation Museum; St Leonard’s Church, Leverington;  Vivien Fire Engine Trust; Wisbech Grammar School;  Chatteris Museum; a historic walk in Chatteris; and Whittlesey Museum.
